An edifice being constructed close to the Association International School (AIS) in Airport has got residents of the area up in arms.
The 22-storey building according to residents, causes heavy vehicular traffic and noise pollution in the area.
The airport residential area is home to some of the most prestigious hotels in Accra, the Kotoka International Airport and a plush settlement of individual homes.
Residents believe city authorities have been compromised by the developer and hence their decision to turn a blind eye to the construction and all the problems it is creating for them.
They are threatening to take legal action against the city authorities and the developer if a solution is not found to the problem soon enough.
Speaking in an interview, a resident of the area said, “This matter really concerns me because there have been so many government agencies that have been informed about this illegal construction. The lack of an excavation permit. The EPA has been notified, the urban roads, local government, civil aviation, etc and nobody has done anything.”
Further describing their frustration she said, “They gave them eight weeks to repair the damage the excavation had caused. This has not been completed. We’re in December. We have seen that they have not done what the local authorities, Ayawaso West, told them to do and nobody has done anything about it. The assembly hasn’t even taken them to court for breaching their order.”
The Airport residential area is under the newly carved Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly and residents say they can no longer trust the government agencies or the security personnel to deal with the situation for them.
