Two hundred and twenty-four Ghanaians who were stranded in the United Kingdom have arrived in Ghana as part of the government’s efforts to evacuate Ghanaians stranded abroad.

The evacuees were checked into the country by personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service and health officials on Wednesday.

A second batch of evacuees from the UK is expected to arrive this Sunday.

Prior to departure, the evacuees were mandated to satisfy government’s pre-condition to bear the full cost of their 14-day mandatory quarantine when they arrive in the country.

They have been scheduled to be accommodated at the Airport View Hotel, Alisa Hotel and Marriot Hotel.

It is estimated that, a night at the Airport View Hotel cost about GHS500, at Alisa Hotel cost GHS60 and at the Marriot Hotel cost GHS600.

According to government reports, it has evacuated about 856 stranded Ghanaians.

A big cause of concern for some stranded Ghanaians is the cost for their mandatory quarantine in the various hotels.

Many of the returnees say they have already run out of money whilst stranded abroad and hence cannot afford to pay for the full cost as stipulated by the government.

The Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration responded to the concerns saying consultations were ongoing with a view to reducing the costs.
