3 killed, 15 injured in Winneba mob attack over land dispute

Three people are dead, and 15 others, including a police officer, have been injured after a violent mob attack in New Winneba, in the Effutu North District of the Central Region, on Tuesday morning.

The assault, carried out by an estimated 300 individuals armed with guns, cutlasses, stones, and clubs, targeted parts of the township, leaving several homes and shops belonging to residents ransacked or destroyed.

Authorities say the violence stems from an ongoing land litigation conflict.

The attack began around 10:40 a.m. on September 1, 2026, prompting an immediate security response. The wounded have been transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.

Security forces from the Central Regional Police Command, the Winneba Divisional Police headquarters, and patrol units from Agona Swedru District were deployed to restore order.

In a further move to reinforce the operation, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered additional personnel and two armoured vehicles from the National Police headquarters to the area.

The identities of the deceased and the specific triggers of the clash have yet to be confirmed.

Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, including the destruction of property.
