9 dead, 27 critically injured in head-on collision on Kintampo-Tamale highway

A head-on collision between a passenger bus and a tomato-laden cargo truck has killed nine people and left 27 others critically injured on the Kintampo-Tamale highway.

The crash occurred around 3:00 am on April 3. According to police reports, the passenger bus (registration GS-2564-20), travelling to Widaana in the Pusiga District, attempted to overtake two vehicles and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with an oncoming cargo truck (registration GR-4958-K) carrying tomatoes to Kumasi Suronuase in the Kintampo North municipality.

Eight people died at the scene, while a ninth victim succumbed to injuries upon arrival at the Kintampo Municipal Hospital. The 27 critically injured are currently receiving emergency care at the same facility.

Eyewitnesses described the impact as catastrophic, with both vehicles reduced to mangled wreckage and tomatoes scattered across the asphalt.

The accident has renewed public outrage over the poor condition of the Kintampo-Tamale highway, a stretch notorious for potholes and inadequate maintenance. Residents and road safety advocates have long warned that the road is a death trap.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims. An investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
