We’re using ‘archaic’ ways of thinking to solve modern problems – Professor Chris Gordon

Former Director of the Institute of Environment and Sanitation Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Chris Gordon has warned that Ghana cannot use old ways of thinking to solve modern problems.

Speaking at this year’s Alexander Adum Kwapong lectures series on ‘Nature Speaks’, the academician decried the quality of graduates produced from schools, saying they are unable to solve emerging challenges.

Professor Chris Gordon advised lecturers to devise new ways of teaching students to tackle the country’s problems.

”Information needs are changing but the types of graduates are not. And there in lies the problem. This is why we have the problems in managing our natural resources. We are using 1920s and 1940s thinking to handle this”

“We are starting to train them now. Will they be fit for purpose to meet this challenge of the wicked problems that we face?”, he quizzed.

The theme of the program was “Innovation, Transition and Disruption in Natural Resource
Management: The role of the African University”
