Here’s how to tell whether you’re in an equal relationship

Being in an equitable relationship means more than just splitting chores. It requires a certain amount of working together and respecting one another’s boundaries. Wondering whether your union is up to snuff?

You respect each other’s sexual needs.

In a positive, balanced relationship, no party ever feels uncomfortable saying no to sex, and discussing one’s desires, wants, and needs is highly valued.

You work on forgiveness together.

Couples fight; it’s natural. The healthiest relationships are those in which partners come together to hash out a solution and listen to what the other has been thinking.

You fight friendly.

How you fight also matters. Partners who respect one another never name-call, shame, or devalue their loved one because of a disagreement. Instead, they listen to the other person’s side and carefully consider their feelings.

You try to balance day-to-day responsibilities.

Life gives us lots to do — from daily errands to managing a home and juggling the kids’ hobbies. No one can do it all on their own. Partners who truly believe in equality will divide and conquer tasks to share the burden.

You both believe in “me time.”

It’s unhealthy to expect to spend every waking moment with someone. Some experts even note that brief periods of separation from your partner (to do your own thing) will help you recharge your batteries so you can better respond to their needs.

You work on plans for the future together.

Most relationships require a certain amount of planning — whether it’s taking a trip or moving across the country. The most successful and equitable unions involve partners who discuss long-term decisions openly and regularly.

You discuss expensive purchases before making them.

Financial infidelity is becoming more and more common and is a definite sign of a power imbalance in a relationship. Control of the purse strings should not be in the hands of only one member of a partnership.

You work to achieve your dreams together.

The best part about being in an equitable, loving partnership is working together to achieve personal and life goals, whether that’s getting a promotion or running a marathon. You’re there to boost each other up.

You make each other happy.

True happiness exists in relationships in which each partner feels valued and safe to be themselves. When you’ve found that, you can be sure your mate is a keeper.
