The Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) is calling for a lockdown, if necessary, to prevent the further spread of Coronavirus in Ghana.

Though TUC applauded government for measures taken to stop the spread of the virus, the Union stated that these measures are not enough to contain the pandemic.

Government has banned social gatherings, closed down schools, closed borders and has directed a 14-day quarantine for all citizens who return from abroad.

However, the Trades Union Congress, believes a lockdown might be necessary to fight the pandemic.

“We need more aggressive measures to protect the people from the deadly virus, including a lockdown if that is what is needed to protect the people”, an excerpt of the statement on March 23 read.

The release signed by the Union’s Secretary General, Yaw Baah, also asked the President to provide fiscal support to pharmaceutical companies to produce solutions to the pandemic.

TUC also demanded that government gives out free hand sanitizers to all citizens in the country.

The Union stressed that President Akufo-Addo should take these drastic measures to save the nation.
