The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has begun investigations into the alleged food poisoning at the Accra High School.
As many as 35 students of the Accra High School were admitted at the Adabraka Polyclinic on Tuesday, complaining of stomach discomfort. After a series of examinations and lab tests, doctors confirmed the students were suffering from food poisoning.
By the close of day on Wednesday, thirty of the students had been discharged while the other five stayed on for close observation.
The FDA in its preliminary investigations had revealed, the students consumed Kenkey, fish and fresh pepper sauce prepared under the school feeding programme at the school, which they suspect could be the cause of the poisoning.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Jocelyn Adeline Amusah, Head of Food Safety Management at the FDA, said “we have been to the school and we are continuing with our investigations. We will continue tomorrow [Thursday] to find out more about the source to get to the bottom of it.”
She also explained that as parts of measures to determine the root cause of the incident, the FDA was looking to investigative the conditions under which the said meal was prepared.
The FDA is also looking to assess other students of the school, as others may have suffered the condition too, but never reported to the hospital.
The Headmaster of the Accra High School, Kwabena Baidoo, however, assured guardians and the general public of the safety of their children as calm is restored to campus.
He was noted saying, “There is no epidemic in Accra High School. I want to assure the whole nation that Accra High School is safe.”
