Although he never played for their club, Asante Kotoko, Dan Quaye says he is very much adored by residents of Kumasi especially the football community.

In an interview with Citi Sports, the Hearts of Oak legend jokingly bragged that Asantehene Osei Tutu II is more popular than him in the Ashanti Regional capital.

“I remember after one game in Kumasi against Kotoko I was supposed to join the bus.

“The supporters did not want me to join the bus because they could not believe that it was me in the flesh.

“I could not join the bus in the stadium because the supporters were following me.

“I had to join the bus when it was by the road side and even that they wanted to follow me.

“In Kumasi after Otumfuor I am the next in line.

“Had it not been for the police they would not have allowed me to join the bus,” he laughed.

The six time Ghana Premier League winner helped Accra Hearts of Oak record dominant performances over their arch-rivals Kotoko during his spell with the team from 1999 – 2006.
