A brain aneurysm is a medical condition that involves a bulge in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain.
Typically, brain aneurysms are silent ailments that become a serious problem when it leaks or ruptures, leading to a bleed in the brain and ultimately death.
Benjamin Sarkodie, an Interventional Radiologist has revealed, about six per cent of Ghanaians may have the condition and only a few seek medical care.
Speaking in an interview Mr Sarkodie expressed concern on the rate of brain aneurysms in Ghana.
He said, “There is a condition called brain aneurysm, it is a condition that can lead to death.”
A ruptured aneurysm is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. Most people with the condition, however, live with it undiagnosed till the critical moment of the burst and then it may be too late to do much about the situation.
Mr Sarkodie went on to say, “So for people who have sudden headaches, people who collapse, they come with vomiting, they come with neck pain and many more. It needs to be investigated.”
According to him, the condition can be easily detected through MRI and CT scans and can be treated if patients seek medical care immediately. He advised people to endeavour to go for medical check-ups and screenings when they experience any of the symptoms of brain aneurysm.
“So if you have any headache that comes with vomiting, neck pain, sensitivity to light, it should tell you that it is bigger than a regular headache and you may have to go and see your doctor,” he concluded.
Mr Sarkodie is seeking to rally support to help create awareness of the medical condition and to educate people.
