The Nyantakyiwaa gate, one of the three gates of the Boahen korkor Royal Family, the occupant of the Sunyani Traditional Stool is seeking an order from the Bono Regional House of Chiefs restrain the three paramount chiefs of the Sunyani Traditional Area.
They challenged the legitimacy of the installation of Yaw Agyare with the stool name ‘Odeefuor Ogyeamsan Boahen Korkor II’, Dr Osei Tutu, with the stool name Ofentemfrem Omeneasono Bosoma Asor-Nkrawiri III and Kofi Adom Manu as ‘Nana Yaw Twene Amanfo II’.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) learnt that each of the Akosua Duaa and Kwantwiwaa gates as well as the Abusuapanyin (family head) of the of the Boahen Korkor family enstooled their respective paramount chiefs to occupy the same Sunyani traditional stool.
The stool was rendered vacant following the death of the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II in 2022.
However, the petitioners comprising Abusuapanin Joseph Adjebeng Dankwa, Michael Kumi Amankwaa and Franklin Ofori, all lawful representatives of the Nyantakyiwaa gate prayed the judicial committee of the house to declare their installations void for a fresh process to commence.
An accompanying affidavit filed by the ‘Asante Krobea and Associates’, a Kumasi-based legal firm and counsel, made available to the GNA in Sunyani mentioned Nana Agyare, Dr Tutu and Adom Manu and Nana Kwaku Sarbeng II, the Akwamuhene (sub-chief) of the Sunyani Traditional Council as respondents.
Others include Nana Obiri Yeboah Diawuo, the Benkumhene (sub-chief) of Sunyani, Nana Boadi Akrofa II, the Adontenhene (sub-chief) of Sunyani, Nana Asante-Krobea III, the Twafuohene (sub-chief) of Sunyani and Nana Kwame Kutuma IV, the Nifahene (sub-chief) of the Sunyani Traditional Council.
The rest of the respondents were Nana Akosua Asor Dua Sika Brayie II, the Paramount Queen Mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area and Abusuapanyin Nana Obiri Boahen.
“The petitioners bring this action in order to ensure that the processes for making or enstooling a paramount chief of Sunyani as enshrined in declaration of the Traditional Council Instrument, 2010 (LI 1972 are observed and implemented”, the affidavit stated.
It said: “That will avoid a situation where Sunyani will have multiple claimants to the Sunyani Paramount Stool as is being experienced presently”.
“Per the L.I. 1972, when the Boahen Korkor Paramount Stool of Sunyani becomes vacant either through the death of the occupant or abdication, the Queen mother in consultation with the Abakomahene, the Abakomahemaa and the leaders/Elders of the Royal Family shall nominate a person”.
It explained that the nominee would be subsequently presented to the kingmakers of the Boahen Korkor Royal family before a decision was taken, however noted that the “purported nominations and subsequent enstoolment of the paramount chiefs are contrary to the intendment of L.I. 1972”.
The affidavit therefore prayed the judicial committee to declare that installation of the paramount chiefs as void for the right thing to be done.
