The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has cleared filth from the surroundings of the Tema Republic Road Primary School, Community Four, as part of the National Sanitation Day Campaign exercise.
The exercise formed part of the TMA’s plans to facelift the image of the school and ensure security in the area.
Ms Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said the whole area was lit up, while they used heavy-duty equipment to clear all the nuisances to prepare the grounds for tree planting to beautify the school vicinity.
She urged residents to help the assembly and support the project, adding that they were also repairing all streetlights in the metropolis.
The MCE encouraged citizens to participate in national issues such as the sanitation day, which is observed every first Saturday of the month, noting that her outfit would continually remind residents through announcements and other means to fully participate in the exercise.
According to Ms Bright, communication needs to be improved at every level about participation in the National Sanitation Day, as some Ghanaians assume that somebody was supposed to clean for them.
She said it was a national issue that needed to be tackled at all levels, letting citizens know that it was their civic responsibility to keep their environment clean.
“They must not see it as an activity that the TMA or the government is supposed to carry out with Zoomlion. It is our civic responsibility,” she said.
Madam Mavis Adatsi, the Head Teacher of Republic Road Primary School, expressed gratitude to the MCE and the TMA for clearing the school environment, as the place had been turned into a haven for junkies.
She revealed that some of the junkies besieged the school compound with music boxes playing loud music and smoking while classes were in session, adding that the community also shared the school’s dustbin with them.
She noted such activities affected the enrolment in the school and recalled how a lunatic entered the school compound with a stick during school hours.
Mr Anthony Kow Sam Anoom, the Assembly Member for the Republic Electoral Area, commended the Assembly for the initiative, adding that they would help to take care of the trees to be planted in the community to ensure it achieves its intended purpose.
