Ashanti GJA expresses solidarity with journalists involved in accident during illegal mining coverage

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) says it has received with deep concern the news of an accident involving some journalists who were covering an official assignment on illegal mining activities in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

A statement signed by Mr Kofi Adu Domfe, the Regional Chairman and issued in Kumasi on Friday, said “the Association stood in full solidarity with our affected colleagues in this difficult moment.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organisations.

The safety, welfare, and protection of journalists remained paramount to the GJA, and this unfortunate incident underscored the inherent risks associated with the critical work its members undertake in pursuit of public interest, especially on issues related to galamsey,” the statement said.

The vehicle carrying journalists accompanying officials from the EPA and other security officials on field operations in some illegal mining areas in the Atwima Mponua district, was involved in a fatal accident at a spot near Nyinahin.

They received various degrees of injuries and those in critical condition were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment.

Others are still on admission at a health facility at Afari, in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.

The regional leadership of the GJA expressed its unwavering support to the affected journalists and said the leadership was actively engaging relevant authorities and partners to ensure they received the necessary medical attention and emotional support.

It pointed out that, as journalists continued to play their watchdog role in bringing national attention to environmental and social challenges, it was imperative that their safety was given topmost priority.

“We call on all institutions that engage the media in field operations, particularly in high-risk areas, to adhere strictly to safety protocols and ensure proper coordination and preparedness at all times,” it said.

The statement said the GJA remained resolute in supporting colleagues through these trying times.
