The government has announced a 30 percent reduction in the cost of obtaining a Ghanaian passport, bringing the fee for an ordinary 32-page booklet down from GHC500 to GHC350.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made the announcement, explaining that the decision is part of ongoing efforts to make passports more affordable and accessible to citizens. He said the measure also forms part of a broader modernization plan to improve passport delivery and security systems nationwide.
As part of the reforms, government is also introducing a chip-embedded e-passport with enhanced security features, a 24-hour service operation, home delivery options, and a digital tracking system that allows applicants to monitor their applications online.
The price reduction, however, will only take effect after Parliament approves the necessary amendment to the Fees and Charges Act. Until then, the existing GHC500 fee remains in force.
Mr. Ablakwa said the government is committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian who needs a passport can obtain one without facing prohibitive costs. “This initiative reflects our commitment to equity and inclusion,” he said, adding that the Ministry will continue to strengthen service delivery while maintaining global standards of document security.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry says further details on the rollout date and new service options will be communicated after Parliament reconvenes.
