A few days ago, pictures went viral on social media of different cars using the same registration plates on the streets of Accra and this got everyone talking and asking questions.

A vehicle registration plate, popularly known as a number plate or license plate, is a metal plate with the vehicle registration number inscribed on it and attached to a motor vehicle or trailer for official identification purposes.

All countries in the world require cars to bear this plate and it is unique to each country.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has said it has begun investigations into the happening to ascertain how and why this happened.

Francis Asamoah Tuffuor, Public Relations Officer of the Authority said, “We are investigating the issue and we are having several meetings to get to the bottom of the issue.”

“If the issue goes beyond DVLA and there is the need to invite other state agencies like the police, we will do so,” he concluded.

Since the photos went viral, lots of social media users have questioned the authenticity of the license plate and how multiple cars could bear the same number.

According to DVLA , this should never happen as it has introduced high security and digitised trade licensing with the aim of improving efficiency and security.

The Authority says it has set up a committee which begun meeting on Monday to get to the bottom of the issue.

According to them, the digitisation of the car registration process is part of a long-term plan to ensure the entire vehicle registration regime in the country meets acceptable standards.

Mr Tuffour said measures were being taken to eliminate the existence of long queues which characterises the registration of new vehicles each year. The authority has thus, opened a lot more offices across the country to ensure this is done.

“In the Volta region, customers do not have to go to Ho anymore as our Denu office is one of the new places people in the catchment area can go to get their vehicles registered. In Accra, those around Pokuase and its environs can also go to Amasaman instead of driving to our 37 office,” he concluded.
