New MoMo partnership expands health insurance access

Ghanaians are set to access private health insurance through a new partnership between MTN Mobile Money and DOSH Health Insurance.

The initiative, launched in Accra on Tuesday, would allow users to purchase, manage and pay for private health insurance directly on their mobile phones using MoMo.

It seeks to address low private health insurance penetration, with industry estimates indicating that fewer than 15 per cent of Ghanaians have private cover due to cost, complex registration and limited accessibility.

Mr Frank Dagbul, Chief Executive Officer of DOSH Health Insurance, said the launch marked a national shift in strengthening private insurance options.

“Across our nation, too many families face barriers to health care coverage, many delay medical care because of out-of-pocket expenses. It was the reason DOSH was created, to change this narrative,” he stated.

Mr Dagbul said the integration of DOSH into MoMo, with over 12 million active users, would “break down digital barriers in accessing private insurance.”

He described the initiative as the beginning of a new era in health insurance where technology aligned with compassion.

Mr Dagbul said millions of MoMo users could now access private health insurance as easily as sending money or paying bills.

“No forms, no queues, no bank accounts required. Just a mobile phone and a MoMo wallet,” he noted.

Ms Berlinda Amoo, Head of Sales and Marketing at DOSH, outlined the company’s strategy, emphasising affordability, accessibility and value.

She announced that entry‑level premiums would start at GH¢365 per year for a benefit cover of GH¢9,000, targeting individuals, SMEs and the informal sector.

“Whether you are a tomato seller, a truck driver, or a professional, DOSH has a plan that fits,” she said.

Ms Amoo said that DOSH would provide nationwide coverage across accredited facilities, including Ghana Health Service centres, with flexible payment options via MoMo.

She noted that DOSH covered areas often excluded from insurance packages, such as psychiatric care, erectile dysfunction and in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Ms Amoo also highlighted DOSH’s 24‑hour call centre and its commitment to processing and paying clean claims within 24 hours.

Mrs Sylvia Otto Acheampong, Chief Product and Services Officer at Mobile Money Limited, said the partnership supported financial inclusion.

“Our mission is to make life better and brighter for our customers,” she said.

Mrs Acheampong said that the collaboration would enable MTN MoMo to use its wide network to extend insurance access to people who ordinarily could not obtain it.

Mr Simpson Addo, Deputy Director at the Ministry of Health, commended the partnership.

He said the launch aligned with the government’s 24‑hour economic policy and efforts toward Universal Health Coverage through expanded financial protection.

Mr Addo said that the DOSH–MoMo model was a significant step in democratising access to quality healthcare.

“By merging health insurance with Ghana’s most pervasive digital finance platform, the partnership promises to simplify enrolment, enhance convenience, and extend coverage to previously underserved populations, including farmers, artisans, students, and informal workers across both urban and rural areas,” he said.
