Regional Minister urges stakeholders to align efforts to smoothly implement Bawku peace recommendations

Mr Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Minister, has called on all stakeholders to align their efforts for the smooth and inclusive implementation of the Government-adopted recommendations.

The recommendations were contained in the Asantehene-led mediation report on the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

He said the government’s formal adoption of the recommendations and the directive by President John Dramani Mahama for all parties to accept them in good faith, demonstrated an unwavering national commitment to restoring peace, rebuilding Bawku, and fostering harmonious coexistence in the Upper East Region.

Mr Akamugri made the call while briefing members of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), heads of decentralised departments, Municipal and District Chief Executives and Civil Society Organisations, on the security situation in the Region.

He said while general stability had improved across most districts, the Bawku conflict remained the most complex and destabilising security challenge and called for collective efforts to ensure complete healing and restoration of peace.

“The decisive step taken by His Excellency the President underscores the Government’s resolve to restore peace and rebuild Bawku.

“All stakeholders must now align their efforts to ensure a smooth and inclusive implementation of the adopted recommendations,” the Minister stated.

He explained that sustained collaboration among the Regional Security Council, traditional authorities, faith-based organisations, and community leaders over the past year had strengthened early warning systems and enabled timely preventive actions by security agencies, contributing to improved stability in many parts of the Region.

Mr Akamugri said despite these gains, the Bawku conflict continued to undermine socio-economic activities, including education, healthcare delivery, and social cohesion, stressing the need for collective responsibility in supporting the peace process.

He appealed particularly to the youth, to exercise restraint and allow dialogue and due process to prevail, adding that the RCC would intensify public sensitisation, sustained engagement, and coordinated security interventions to support the implementation process.

“Let us remain united, vigilant, and committed, so that together we can rebuild Bawku, restore confidence, and create an enabling environment for development across the Upper East Region,” he urged.

Mr Akamugri noted that a peaceful and united Upper East Region was critical for attracting investment, strengthening decentralisation, and advancing President Mahama’s Resetting Agenda.

He gave an assurance that the Government would continue to work with all relevant stakeholders to consolidate peace and ensure that the people of Bawku and the wider Region enjoyed lasting stability and development.
