Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellembelle, has donated assorted food items and an undisclosed amount of money to more than 500 elderly persons in the constituency as part of the Christmas festivities.
The occasion also marked the 10th anniversary of the AYA Elderly Care Centre, established by the MP to strengthen social care and support services for the aged in the Ellembelle Constituency.
Addressing the beneficiaries at Ampain, Mr Buah said his office began a journey ten years ago with the establishment of the Centre to ensure that people who had worked hard throughout their lives received proper care and attention in old age.
He noted that the elderly needed care in physical, psychological, material and health terms to enable them live meaningful lives.
“The elderly are not actually sick; what they need is companionship—someone to talk to about old times and share laughter, which in itself is healing,” he said.
Mr Buah observed that loneliness was a sickness on its own and urged society to show greater love and care towards the elderly.
The MP prayed for God to grant the beneficiaries good health, long life and fruitfulness so they could continue to live happily.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the MP for the gesture, citing support for their healthcare needs, food supply and financial assistance, which they said complemented government livelihood empowerment efforts.
