African Ambassador for Inclusive Urban Governance and Climate-Resilient Development, Ambassador Gifty Nyarko, has called for a renewed collective commitment to strengthening inclusive, people-centred urban governance and investment in climate-resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions for Africa in 2026.

In her end-of-year message to the Ghana News Agency, (GNA-) in sunyani she emphasized the need for deepening partnerships across borders and sectors, as well as amplifying the voices of women, youth and marginalized communities in building resilient and prosperous cities.

“I wish Africa a peaceful new year filled with renewed collaboration, hope, and impactful action to safeguard infrastructure and ecosystems through committed and conscious efforts to climate resilience,” she said.

She stressed that climate resilience was no longer optional, but central to safeguarding people, infrastructure, and ecosystems for present and future generations and commended African cities for adapting, innovating, and collaborating despite global uncertainties and climate pressures.

She expressed appreciation to governments, city leaders, traditional authorities, civil society organizations, development partners, youth, women, and all stakeholders who worked tirelessly to advance inclusive urban governance and climate-resilient development across Africa.

“Your efforts reaffirm that Africa is not a victim of climate change, but a leader in community-driven solutions and sustainable urban transformation,” she stated.

She emphasized that Africa’s urban future must be shaped by equity, sustainability, and resilience systems across cities and communities, stressing that inclusive urban governance was necessary for Africa.

“We have witnessed inspiring leadership, innovative local solutions, and a growing commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind, especially the most vulnerable populations affected by climate change, rapid urbanization, and socio-economic inequalities,” she noted.

When cities are planned and governed with participation, transparency, and social justice at their core, they become engines of opportunity, dignity, and shared prosperity, she added.
