Panic and fear briefly gripped the usually serene Trasacco enclave when gunshots rang out during a violent confrontation allegedly involving some individuals from Nungua and members linked to the Mmai Djorn–Okpelor Sowa Din Family.
This also prompted swift and decisive intervention by the Police.
Acting on real-time intelligence, the Anti-Landguard Unit of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command moved in immediately as the situation threatened to spiral into full-scale bloodshed.
The operation was led by the Commander of the Unit, Supt Nafiu Shitu, whose men stormed the area amid heightened tension and fear.
Eyewitness accounts described a chilling scene: sporadic gunshots piercing the dawn silence, residents scrambling for cover, and armed men allegedly battling over disputed land claims.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said but for the timely arrival of the Police, the confrontation could have resulted in multiple fatalities.
The rapid tactical response of the Anti-Landguard Unit led to the arrest of six suspected notorious landguards, effectively cutting short what police sources say was an imminent escalation of violence.
It said a subsequent search uncovered a frightening cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, and machetes, confirming the deadly intent behind the confrontation.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were linked to organized landguard networks that had long terrorized landowners and developers, using brute force, firearms, and intimidation to enforce illegal land claims.
The involvement of high-powered weapons has raised serious concerns about the increasing militarization of land disputes in parts of Greater Accra.
The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations and are expected to be arraigned before the court.
The retrieved weapons have been secured as exhibits.
Describing the operation as a critical intervention, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against landguardism, warning that any group or individual who takes up arms under the guise of land ownership will face the full rigours of the law.
Residents of Trasacco have expressed shock at the discovery of such lethal weapons within their community, while commending the Police for averting what many believe could have been a massacre.
Calls have intensified for sustained security operations and expedited prosecution to dismantle landguard syndicates permanently.
The Police have urged the public to remain calm and continue volunteering credible information, assuring that intensified operations will be rolled out across identified flashpoints to prevent violence and restore peace and confidence in land administration and development.
