The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has embarked on a sensitisation campaign in selected tertiary institutions to educate students on data protection, privacy, and the responsible use of digital platforms.
The initiative, being carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, forms part of a nationwide Data Protection Awareness Campaign aimed at educating the public, particularly students, on the importance of protecting personal data and safeguarding privacy in the digital space.
As part of the campaign, the Commission visited some tertiary institutions in Accra on Thursday to engage students on data protection and privacy.
The sessions focused on understanding personal data and privacy, safe and responsible use of digital technologies, the rights and responsibilities of data subjects, and the role of young people in safeguarding personal information.
Some of the institutions visited were the Academic City University College and Accra Technical University.
The Commission is expected to visit other schools across the country until the end of February, culminating in a National Data Protection Conference.
The sensitisation drive forms part of the month-long celebration of Data Protection Week 2026, which commenced on Monday, January 26.
It is being held on the theme: “Your Data, Your Identity: Building Trust in Ghana’s Digital Future.”
Addressing the students, Madam Hilda Odua Sowah, Head of Customer Service at the DPC, urged them to be privacy-conscious and take control of who had access to their personal data.
She cautioned the students to be mindful of what they shared online, noting that the internet never forgot, and encouraged them to exercise their rights as data subjects by allowing only institutions that complied with Data Protection Commission regulations to process their personal data.
