A violent confrontation following a high school sports festival has landed six students from Aggrey Memorial Senior High School in police custody, with their victim hospitalized with serious injuries.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest of the juveniles in connection with the assault on Rexford Owusu-Ansah, a final-year student of Adisadel College.
The incident occurred on Friday, February 20, 2026, shortly after the conclusion of an inter-colleges sports competition at the Cape Coast Stadium.
According to a statement from the Central Regional Police Command, the attack took place around 3:30 p.m. at Pedu Junction.
The victim was returning to campus with two companions when they were confronted by a group of students from Aggrey Memorial.
Police reports indicate the suspects first stopped the trio to inquire if they were from Adisadel College before launching the physical attack. While the victim’s two friends managed to flee the scene, Owusu-Ansah was overwhelmed.
“He was kicked to the ground and severely beaten,” the police statement detailed. In the course of the assault, the attackers allegedly robbed him of his iPhone 17 Pro Max, GH¢1,400 in cash, and his pair of shoes.
Later that evening, at about 7:30 p.m., the authorities of Aggrey Memorial SHS handed over the six suspects to the Kotokuraba Police Station.
The victim received immediate first aid at the stadium clinic before being transferred to the Cape Coast Regional Hospital for further treatment. He was discharged on Sunday, February 22.
A medical report endorsed by a doctor has confirmed the severity of the assault, noting that Owusu-Ansah sustained a fracture to the bone around his right eye, leaving him temporarily unable to open it.
The two friends who escaped are cooperating with the police and have reportedly stated that they can identify the assailants.
The Central Regional Police Command has issued a strong warning against such acts of violence.
“The Central Regional Police Command strongly condemns the violence and assures the public that due process will be followed as the juvenile offenders will face the full rigours of the law,” said ASP Patrick Bentum, Acting Head of Public Affairs, in the released statement.
