Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI), Justice Kudzo Normeshie, Public Affairs Officer of the Aflao Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), has cautioned commercial motor riders in Aflao to desist from using unapproved routes to illegally transport foreigners into the country.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), DSI Normeshie said that although some riders might gain financially from the practice, their actions had serious repercussions on the security of the state.
He noted that intelligence gathered by the Service indicated that some motor riders were aiding irregular migrants to cross through porous and unapproved routes for monetary gains.
He warned that facilitating unlawful entry into Ghana undermined border control systems and exposed the country to criminal networks and other security risks.
DSI Normeshie explained that the Ghana Immigration Service had intensified stakeholder engagements under the newly introduced Community Prevention Forum (CPF) to strengthen collaboration with communities in addressing irregular migration and related cross-border crimes.
He called on the public to volunteer credible information on persons who cross the border unlawfully, especially those who sometimes receive assistance through unofficial routes.
He stated that some irregular migrants received assistance through unapproved routes from unscrupulous individuals, including certain security officers, for financial gain.
He stressed that such acts would not be tolerated and assured that the Service would deal decisively with anyone found complicit in undermining Ghana’s border security.
DSI Normeshie reiterated that safeguarding the country’s borders was a shared responsibility and urged residents of Aflao and its environs to support the Service with timely and reliable information.
