Ghana evacuates Tehran embassy staff as Middle East tensions sour

By News1

The government has initiated the evacuation of non-essential personnel from its Embassy in Tehran and activated emergency protocols for citizens across the Middle East.

The move comes in response to a significant escalation in military hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has sharply deteriorated regional security.

In a press release issued on Saturday, February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it has “initiated the evacuation of some staff of the Embassy of Ghana in Tehran.”

A skeletal team will remain to ensure the continuation of consular services for Ghanaians still residing in Iran.

The decision follows a series of coordinated military strikes by the U.S. and Israel against targets inside Iran.

According to the Ministry, Iran has retaliated by targeting Israeli and American military assets in the Gulf region, specifically in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

These nations are home to a large number of Ghanaian expatriates, including workers, traders, and students.

The escalating conflict has led to airspace closures in several areas and widespread flight disruptions, raising serious concerns about the viability of evacuation routes if the situation continues to deteriorate.

In response, the Ministry has issued urgent directives to Ghanaian nationals in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE.

Citizens are advised to shelter in place where possible, strictly follow instructions from local authorities, avoid large gatherings and sensitive locations, and keep their travel documents readily accessible at all times.

They are also urged to monitor official communications and stay in contact with the nearest Ghanaian diplomatic mission.

“The Ministry advises Ghanaian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to and from the Middle East,” the statement added.

Beyond the immediate safety measures, the Ghanaian government is appealing for de-escalation.

The official statement called on the United States, Israel, and Iran to “exercise restraint, de-escalate and return to diplomatic engagement in the interest of protecting lives, ensuring economic stability and lasting regional peace.”

The Ministry has confirmed that emergency consular hotlines have been activated for Ghanaians in the region, and diplomatic missions remain on standby to assist.

Officials state that assessments are ongoing to determine if further evacuations will be necessary.

As of this report, the government has not released the total number of Ghanaian nationals currently residing in conflict-affected countries.
