Over 40,000 voters head to polls in Ayawaso East by-election

Voters in the Ayawaso East constituency are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new representative in a tightly contested by-election.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that over 40,000 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the race to succeed the late Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away in January.

Following the internal primaries of the major political parties, the contest has narrowed to a two-horse race between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Baba Ali and the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Baba Jamal, a former High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Ahead of the poll, the EC assured the public of its preparedness.

“This by-election is a first-past-the-post parliamentary election, meaning one vote can truly make a difference,” said Fred Tetteh, the EC’s Director of Research, on Monday.

He added that the commission would not hesitate to sanction any proven cases of fraud or electoral misconduct.

Security has been heightened in the area, with the Ghana Police Service deploying personnel across the constituency to ensure a peaceful atmosphere and deter any disruptions. Voting is currently underway, with results expected later tonight.
