The power of cashew crop: Unlocking hidden benefits

The cashew plant (Anacardium occidentale) is a tropical evergreen tree, native to South America and widely cultivated in Ghana in particular and in West Africa in general.

In Ghana, the economic tree is very common in the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo and Ashanti Regions where farmers cultivate in commercial quantities.

Cashew is a valuable crop, providing income and nutrition to farmers and contributing significantly into the country’s economy.

The cashew plant is drought-resistant and relatively low in need for regular maintenance, making cashew farming an option for many.

Besides, its versatility is making cashew farming an attractive enterprise in the nation’s agricultural sector.

In fact, the cashew plant has several benefits, from nutritious nuts to healthy fats, protein, and minerals.

The juicy pulp is used for beverages while the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in the plant have numerous health benefits.

However, the nation is missing out on the full health benefits of raw cashew, only concentrating on the nuts, as the apple remaina hidden treasure trove of possibilities.

Despite its numerous benefits, many farmers concentrate solely on the cashew nut, overlooking the potential of the cashew apple.

Mr Edmond Anokye, a cashew farmer at Wamfie in the Bono Region, said the cashew apple “is a treasure trove of possibilities.”

“It can serve as an excellent alternative to garden eggs and its flavour and texture are unique,” he stated, noting that the cashew apple is emerging as an alternative to garden eggs.

Mr Anokye said the cashew apple’s pulp and juice mimics the texture and flavour of garden eggs in various dishes, offering a creative solution for chefs and home cooks.

He said: “The slightly sweet and tangy taste complements sauces, stews, and soups, making it an excellent substitute in traditional recipes”, saying that the apple is packed with rich nutrients of high vitamin ‘C’ and antioxidant content that added value to meals.

A GAME-CHANGER IN GHANAIAN CUISINE

The cashew fruit is a healthier choice, free from agro-chemicals.

Mr Anokye said the use of the cashew apple for traditional recipes like stew and soup remained an excellent substitute, urging Ghanaians to “give it a try”.

“It’s a game-changer in the kitchen, and you’ll never go back to garden eggs.  it’s a waste to let the apple go to waste,” he added.

Besides, cashew has other environmental benefits of preventing soil erosion, economic benefits of improving socio-economic livelihoods, as well as the nation’s economy and industrial uses for furniture and fuel.
