Creative Arts Agency demands probe into alleged assault on Ibrahim Mahama

The Creative Arts Agency has condemned the alleged assault on renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama in Tamale, calling the incident a serious violation of human rights and artistic freedom.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 23, the Agency said it was “deeply disturbed” by reports that Mahama was assaulted by officers of the Ghana Police Service, stressing that no citizen should be subjected to brutality or abuse.

“No citizen, regardless of profession or status, should be subjected to brutality, intimidation, or abuse by those entrusted with upholding law and order,” the statement read.

The Agency noted that Mahama is a globally recognized figure whose work continues to elevate Ghana’s cultural identity on the international stage. It warned that such incidents, if confirmed, could erode public trust and undermine the safe environment essential for creative expression.

“Ibrahim Mahama is a globally recognised cultural figure whose work continues to elevate Ghana’s creative identity on the international stage. Such actions, if proven, undermine public trust and threaten the safe, enabling environment necessary for artistic expression,” the Agency added.

The Agency called on the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter and ensure that any officers found culpable are held accountable.

“We call on the Ghana Police Service to immediately launch a thorough, transparent investigation into the matter and ensure that all officers found culpable are held fully accountable in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

The Agency further expressed solidarity with Mahama and the broader creative community, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of artists.

It urged calm among the public and called on all stakeholders to pursue justice through lawful means.
