14 children rescued as floods hit Tema

By News1

At least 14 children have been rescued after heavy rains caused widespread flooding in Tema Manhean in the early hours of Sunday.

The downpour, which began around 3 a.m., submerged homes and left streets impassable, particularly in low-lying areas such as Waterland in Tema New Town.

Personnel from the Ghana Navy, assisted by local volunteers, carried out rescue operations.

However, some residents have refused to evacuate, citing fears of theft if they leave their homes unattended.

A resident, Eric Adjetey, said he narrowly escaped after being woken by water rushing into his house.

Assembly Member Felix Mensah Normeshie blamed the flooding on a blocked major drain.

He added that a four-day-old baby, nearly swept away by the waters, was rescued by neighbours and is in stable condition.
