Oti Regional Police Commander leads de-escalation mission to Nkwanta after armed attack

By GNA

The Oti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Alex Acquah, has undertaken a working visit to Nkwanta South to assess the security situation and lead efforts to de-escalate tensions following a recent armed attack.

A statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr John Nchor, Public Affairs Officer of Oti Regional Command and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the visit undertaken with senior officers from the Regional Command formed part of proactive measures by the Ghana Police Service to maintain calm and reinforce public confidence in the municipality.

It said aside the engagement with other youth and traditional authorities, DCOP Acquah met executives of the Konkomba Youth Association and urged them to remain calm, exercise restraint and support ongoing efforts to preserve peace and stability.

The statement said the engagement follows an attack on a resident known as Mr Moses Fuseini, who sustained pellet wounds and is currently receiving medical treatment.

It however disclosed that investigations were ongoing and appealed to residents to have confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

In another development, the statement revealed that the Regional Commander also paid a courtesy call on the Konkomba Chief, Nana Teki II, at his palace, where he briefed the traditional authority, elders and family members of the victim on measures being taken to ensure justice and prevent reprisals.

Nana Teki II expressed concern over the incident but assured the Police of the community’s commitment to peace.

He indicated that residents would cooperate fully with law enforcement and allow due process to take its course.

The Ghana Police Service assured the public in the statement that efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect and bring the perpetrator to justice.

The Police urged residents to remain calm, avoid speculation and support investigations by providing credible information.

“The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all persons in the region. We encourage the public to use appropriate channels to report concerns,” the statement said.

Nkwanta South, a key commercial centre in the Oti Region has experienced intermittent security challenges in recent years, prompting periodic deployments by the Regional Security Council.

The latest visit by the Regional Commander underscores a strategy of early engagement with key stakeholders, including youth groups and traditional leaders, to prevent escalation of tensions.

Police say patrols and intelligence-led operations have been intensified in the area as part of ongoing stabilisation efforts.
