DVLA announces free replacement of defective embossed plates

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a recall of a limited batch of defective 2026 embossed number plates, offering free replacements to affected vehicle owners.

In a public notice issued on April 27, the DVLA disclosed that routine quality checks revealed certain plates failed to meet the Authority’s durability standards, resulting in fading printed characters.

Although the defective batch was immediately withdrawn from circulation upon detection, some plates had already been issued.

“All affected vehicle owners are invited to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement,” the Authority stated.

The DVLA apologized for the inconvenience and accepted full responsibility for the oversight.

“The DVLA is strengthening its quality assurance processes to prevent a recurrence and remains committed to delivering safe, reliable and high-quality vehicle registration services,” the statement added.

The Authority did not disclose the exact size of the affected batch or the number of vehicles involved. Vehicle owners have been urged to visit their nearest DVLA office for assistance.
