Two in critical condition after violent chieftaincy clash

By News1

Two people remain in critical condition at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital following a violent attack linked to a chieftaincy dispute.

The victims sustained life-threatening cutlass wounds during the assault three days ago in Wassa Domama, located in the Western Region’s Wassa East District.

In the wake of the attack, two elders of the town’s Odikro, Nana Tweneboa Ntow II, have reportedly fled their homes and spent the last two nights hiding in a nearby bush, fearing further violence.

A separate victim connected to the incident is also receiving treatment at the Twifo Praso Government Hospital.

Four others who suffered minor injuries have since been treated and discharged.

Narrating the events to ConnectNews, Nana Tweneboa Ntow II said he was holding a council meeting with his elders after attending a funeral last Saturday when one of his relatives ran into the compound bleeding heavily.

“Moments later, there was a commotion, and some heavily built young men stormed the premises and started attacking people associated with me,” he said.

He described the injuries in detail: “One victim had his thumb completely severed. Others suffered deep cutlass wounds, including one person with a serious head injury. We had to rush them to the hospital.”

The Odikro alleged the attack was likely triggered by an unresolved chieftaincy dispute, accusing the local regent of orchestrating intimidation against his supporters.

“There have been disturbances for some time now. Persons we believe are linked to the regent have been terrorising people without provocation,” he claimed.

Nana Tweneboa Ntow II further expressed frustration over the police response, stating that despite multiple reports, no concrete action has been taken to restore calm.

“This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. We have made countless reports to the police, but no arrests have been made. This has emboldened the perpetrators. As I speak, residents are still moving around in fear. Two of my elders have not been able to return home.”

He warned that the situation could deteriorate further if urgent security measures are not implemented.

Meanwhile, ConnectNews has gathered that police investigators are awaiting formal statements from the injured victims, who are still receiving medical treatment, before launching a full-scale investigation and making any arrests.
