A major intelligence-led security operation in the Upper East Region has resulted in the arrest of 80 suspects following a coordinated police swoop that lasted over a week.
The exercise, carried out by the Upper East Regional Police Command in collaboration with the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) Special Operations Team, targeted criminal hideouts in Bolgatanga, Tongo, Bongo, and the Nabdam District between May 25 and June 3, 2026.
According to police sources, the arrests were made across multiple locations. Zuarungu had 12 suspects (8 males, 4 females), including three Nigerian nationals and one Ghanaian female; Bongo had 34 suspects (32 males, 2 females).

Nabdam District (Perlungu, Kongo, Nangodi) had 14 suspects (12 males, 2 females), and Bolgatanga had 20 suspects.

Preliminary investigations indicate that those arrested have been involved in narcotics peddling and consumption, as well as other criminal activities.

During the swoop, security personnel also recovered a significant cache of items, including a motorcycle, assorted foreign cigarettes, male condoms, and quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp in Tongo.

In Bongo, three rounds of 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition and two motorbikes were recovered.
In Nabdam, parcels and sacks of dried leaves suspected to be narcotics, assorted drinks believed to contain narcotic content, an unregistered motorbike, assorted foreign cigarettes, and pieces of a casino jackpot machine.

In Bolgatanga, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, assorted cigarettes, a black Yamaha Sirius (registration M-19-UE 2688), a black Luojia (registration M-13-UE 7181), an unregistered Haojue motorbike, and a casino jackpot machine.
All 80 suspects remain in police custody and are set to be arraigned before the court to face the full rigours of the law.
