One person has been confirmed dead following a road traffic collision involving a saloon car and a stationary truck at the Ako Adjei Interchange in Accra on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as the driver of a Zedrive saloon car with registration number GW 6334-26, was trapped in the wreckage after his vehicle collided with the rear of a KIA Rhino truck (GE 1120-15), which was reportedly parked on the roadway due to a mechanical fault.
According to a statement from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a distress call was received at approximately 1:16 a.m., prompting a rapid response from a rescue team deployed from the GNFS headquarters.
The team, led by ADO I Yussif Yakubu, arrived at the scene within six minutes.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the driver trapped in the severely damaged saloon car and unresponsive.
A medical assessment conducted at the scene confirmed that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.
Fire officers subsequently conducted an extrication operation to retrieve the body, which involved removing parts of the vehicle, including the driver-side door and the steering wheel. The operation was concluded at 2:14 a.m.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the saloon car crashed into the rear of the faulty truck, which had been left stationary on the road.
Authorities have indicated that further inquiries are ongoing to determine the precise circumstances that led to the collision.
In the wake of the incident, the GNFS has issued a strong advisory to motorists, particularly those whose vehicles develop faults on the road, to immediately place reflective warning triangles or other visible warning devices to alert oncoming traffic, especially at night.
The Service extended its heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family and reiterated its call for all road users to exercise maximum caution and strictly adhere to road safety regulations at all times.
