The Ghanaian health community is mourning the loss of Thomas “Mac” Scofield, a pioneering technologist whose visionary leadership revolutionised the country’s healthcare delivery through the development of a groundbreaking eHealth system.
Scofield passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy that has fundamentally transformed how patient data is managed and shared across Ghana.
He was instrumental in creating and advancing the electronic health platform that powers the LHIMS (Lightwave Health Information Management System) software, recognised as Africa’s first Health Information Exchange of its kind.
Through his technical expertise and unwavering commitment, Scofield helped build a platform that now enables seamless, secure patient data sharing across more than 450 health facilities nationwide.
The system has strengthened continuity of care, improved operational efficiency, and delivered measurable improvements in health outcomes for countless Ghanaians.
But Scofield’s impact extended far beyond code and software architecture. He was deeply committed to equity in healthcare, personally travelling to remote and underserved communities during the system’s assessment and implementation phases.
His hands-on approach ensured that no Ghanaian, regardless of geography, would be left behind in the digital health revolution.
Today, the platform actively supports clinicians and patients across 110 facilities under the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).
Colleagues remember Scofield not just for his technical brilliance, but for his humility and passion. He was known for approaching teammates with a simple but profound question: “Is there anything I can do to help?”, a phrase that encapsulated his servant-leadership philosophy.
He will be deeply missed by colleagues, partners, and the broader health community whose work continues to be shaped by his enduring legacy.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
