HIV drug shortage sparks fear among patients

By News1

Health officials are warning that Ghana’s supply of HIV and TB testing kits could run out by the end of July, sparking fears among thousands of patients who rely on life-saving antiretroviral drugs.

The Network of Persons Living with HIV says some health facilities already have no ART medicines available, with remaining stock either expiring this month or already expired.

The Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism confirms that oral and blood-based HIV test kits at central stores can barely last until August, while TB testing cartridges are expected to run out by September.

Vice President Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin noted that the shortages could delay diagnosis, interrupt treatment, and increase transmission risks.

The warning comes as Ghana prepares for reduced Global Fund support, putting pressure on domestic financing.

Activists are urging the government to urgently mobilise resources to protect progress in the fight against HIV and TB.
