Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Greater Accra Regional Minister Hon. Linda Ocloo, and the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies joined President John Dramani Mahama at the forefront of the nationwide clean-up exercise on Friday.
Their collective presence underscored the government’s commitment to environmental sanitation as a shared national duty and a cornerstone of flood prevention efforts.
The initiative comes in the wake of torrential rains that caused widespread inundation, claiming approximately 29 lives, displacing families, clogging drainage systems, and leaving behind significant debris that has disrupted livelihoods and damaged public infrastructure across the country.

The exercise, which commenced promptly at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10, is designed to clear accumulated refuse, desilt choked waterways, restore public spaces, and enhance stormwater flow as part of broader efforts to mitigate future flood risks.

Friday’s operations have drawn broad participation from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), public and private institutions, security services, educational establishments, waste management firms, and ordinary citizens, all engaged in coordinated clean-up activities.

The exercise will continue until 1:00 p.m. today and resume on Saturday, July 11, during the same hours.
While Friday’s activities are centred on institutional participation, Saturday’s phase will place greater emphasis on community-led efforts, with residents, volunteer groups, traditional authorities, security agencies, MMDAs, and waste management companies expected to drive clean-up operations in their respective localities.

Reinforcing the national effort, Zoomlion has deployed personnel, heavy-duty equipment, and logistics across affected regions, clearing major roads and providing critical support to flood-hit communities.

The government has called on all Ghanaians to actively participate in the exercise, emphasising that environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility and a vital preventive measure against flooding, safeguarding both lives and property.
