Ledzokuku unite to clear waste and reclaim its environment

Hundreds of residents, traders, commercial drivers, motorcyclists, traditional leaders, security personnel, public and private sector workers have joined the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly in a clean-up exercise to observe the National Sanitation Day initiative.

The exercise, which covered major roads and communities brought together personnel from the security agencies, environmental health officers, members of the traditional council, assembly staff, religious organisations and community members to remove refuse and clear choked drains.

The participants also swept roadsides, weeded overgrown areas, cleared road medians, and collected heaps of refuse that had accumulated over time.

Traders suspended their business activities to join the exercise, while commercial drivers and motorcyclists also assisted in clearing waste from public spaces.

Mr Israel Adjei Otchwenmah, the Ledzokuku Municipal Chief Executive, said the municipality remained committed to ensuring that all waste collected during the exercise was promptly evacuated.

Mr Otchwenmah expressed concern over the large quantities of silt, plastic waste and other debris found in drains, saying the situation confirmed the need for regular community clean up exercises.

He said that although waste disposal remained challenging because of issues affecting some dumping sites, the assembly had deployed trucks to transport the collected refuse and was working hard to ensure that the municipality was cleaned by the close of the day.

He said the clean-up exercise would be intensified and organised every month to help maintain clean communities and prevent environmental pollution.

He commended the commitment shown by the security agencies, particularly the military, for actively participating in the exercise alongside environmental health officers and residents and praised the Ledzokuku Traditional Council for supporting the exercise.

The MCE expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for championing the exercise while also acknowledging the contribution of Flex Fabrication Limited, which donated about fifteen wheelbarrows to support the exercise, which enhanced the work of volunteers and environmental officers by making it easier to transport refuse from collection points to waiting trucks.

He expressed optimism that the continued collaboration among residents, traditional leaders, security agencies, religious organisations and the assembly would contribute to a cleaner, healthier and more resilient Ledzokuku Municipality.

Madam Dorothy Lawoe, Municipal Environmental Health Officer, commended residents for their active participation in the clean-up exercise, describing their response as encouraging and a demonstration of their commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Madam Lawoe urged them to sustain the effort by making proper waste disposal and regular clean-up activities part of their daily routine.

She acknowledged the commitment of the MCE to improving environmental sanitation by helping in the organisation of regular cleanup exercises across the municipality, which had strengthened public participation and contributed significantly to efforts to keep the municipality clean.
