President John Dramani Mahama has announced the recruitment of at least 16,000 newly trained teachers and graduates from colleges of education, in a major move to address the growing backlog of unemployed teaching professionals awaiting placement.
The President announced the development on Thursday during an inspection tour of the Peki College of Education in the Volta Region, where he assessed progress on the construction of a new 1,500-capacity multipurpose assembly hall.
He said the recruitment forms part of Government’s broader commitment to creating employment opportunities for graduates and strengthening the country’s education sector.
“We are clearing the backlog of trained teachers who have been waiting for placement,” President Mahama said.
“At least 16,000 of them will be recruited as part of this exercise.”

The President also inspected the assembly hall project, which he noted was initiated under his previous administration alongside a girls’ hostel, the latter already completed and in use.
He expressed satisfaction that work has resumed on the auditorium after years of inactivity, and commended the quality of construction so far.

He disclosed that the facility is nearing completion, with the delivery and installation of furniture being the final major step.
Arrangements, he said, have been made for the furniture to be delivered within the month, after which the hall will be officially commissioned.

President Mahama further reiterated Government’s resolve to improve conditions across colleges of education through investments in infrastructure, student accommodation, and other essential facilities to strengthen teaching and learning outcomes.

He encouraged students to remain dedicated to their studies, stressing that Ghana’s future depends on a well-trained, skilled, and motivated generation of young professionals.
