TikToker jailed for one year in prison over false claims against President Mahama

A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced 43-year-old social media influencer Camilla Alhassan to one year in prison after she pleaded guilty to offensive conduct and the publication of false news.

Between June 30 and July 5, 2026, Alhassan posted a series of TikTok videos in which she alleged that President John Dramani Mahama had sacrificed 32 cows to secure political power.

She further claimed that the government’s distribution of sanitary pads to victims of the June 29 flood was intended to conceal the purported sacrifices.

Delivering its ruling on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the court struck out a charge of electronic abuse, noting that it lacked the legal jurisdiction to adjudicate that offence.

However, it convicted Alhassan on the remaining counts and imposed a custodial sentence of one year.

Following the verdict, her lawyer, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, confirmed that the defence had appealed for a more lenient penalty.

The court, however, declined, stating that the increasing prevalence of such offences warranted a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to others.
