Police in the Bono East Region have arrested six suspects in connection with a daring highway robbery that occurred on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway, recovering the full amount of GHC 300,000 stolen from the victim.
The incident took place on the evening of July 19, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM, just meters away from the Portor Police Barrier under the Kintampo Police Division.
Acting on intelligence that a robbery was in progress, Police personnel quickly responded and moved to the scene.
Upon arrival, four of the suspects fled into a nearby bush. However, officers managed to arrest Abdul Sadat Ali, a 24-year-old driver of a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25.
During preliminary interrogation, Ali implicated Samad Issahaka, also 24, the driver of a Kia Rhino with registration number AS 7337-23, who was subsequently taken into custody.
Further investigations revealed that the Kia Rhino was owned by Yahaya Seidu, 35, who had instructed his driver to take him to Buipe to purchase cattle.
Unknowingly to Seidu, his driver conspired with five others to rob him on the highway, knowing his boss was carrying a large sum of money.
Armed with a toy pistol, the suspects followed the Kia Rhino and its occupants, intercepted them after the Portor Police Barrier, and made off with the cash.
A joint operation involving Police Counter Terrorism personnel and local patrol teams pursued the fleeing suspects into the bush, leading to the arrest of all four remaining individuals: Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26.
A search of the suspects led to the full recovery of the stolen GHC 300,000. During interrogation, the suspects confessed that they had been tipped off by suspect Samed Issahaka and had trailed the Kia Rhino all the way from Offinso in the Ashanti Region before carrying out the robbery at Portor.
All six suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Ghana Police Service has commended the alertness and professionalism of its personnel, as well as the Counter Terrorism team, for their swift action in ensuring the arrests and recovery of the stolen funds.
Police have also reassured the public of their continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property within the Bono East Region.
