Three men have been remanded into police custody following their arrest in connection with the alleged lynching of a 34-year-old man at Sabon Zongo, a suburb of Kumasi, over the weekend.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command identified the deceased as Yusuf Zakari, who was reportedly attacked by a group of individuals in the early hours of Saturday, 19 July.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred at a cattle kraal in the area, where the victim sustained severe injuries during the assault.
Zakari was initially rushed to the Manhyia Government Hospital for urgent medical attention before being referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the referral facility, police said.
In what the police described as “swift investigations”, three suspects were apprehended in connection with the incident. They have been identified as Moses Adoko, 37, a plumber; Abubakari Adams, 25, a herdsman; and Nurudeen Suleman, 35, a motor mechanic.
The suspects were arraigned before the Asokore Mampong District Court, presided over by Her Worship Mrs Hilder Esther Wryter. The court remanded all three into police custody, with their next appearance scheduled for 7 August.
Meanwhile, investigators say efforts are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged lynching and to identify any other individuals who may have participated in the attack.
“The Police have commenced further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are making efforts to identify and arrest any other persons who may have been involved,” the police statement read.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging citizens to report suspected criminal activities to the police for lawful action rather than resorting to vigilante justice.
The Command further appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest police station or use the police emergency hotlines.
“The Police remain committed to ensuring that all persons connected with this incident are brought to justice through the due process of law,” the statement added.
