The Minority Caucus in Parliament has declared it will oppose any new financial requests from Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during today’s 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review.
“If the finance minister comes here… he should not come and ask for any money because we will not give him any money because of the money that we have given,” First Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu said.
Speaking on Wednesday, July 23, Habib Iddrisu (MP for Tolon) insisted the government must use the review to account for its performance, not to seek additional appropriations.
They argue Ghanaian contractors are suffering due to unpaid arrears, and the government must outline a clear payment plan.
They want updates on the Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme, the 24-hour economy policy, the Women’s Development Bank, and the “One, Three, Three” initiative, all of which they claim remain unfulfilled “on paper.”
With Parliament having recently approved roughly US$1 billion in loans, the Minority insists the focus should be on prudent use of already-approved resources, not fresh borrowing.
The Mid-Year Budget Review is expected to cover economic performance in the first half of 2026, assess implementation of the annual budget, and revise fiscal projections.
However, with the Minority vowing to scrutinise every line of the statement, the session is set to be highly contentious.
The government faces stiff opposition to any new funding requests, with the Minority demanding accountability, contractor payments, and tangible results on campaign promises before further financial approvals are considered.
