11 fake security operatives arrested

By News1

The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested 11 suspects for extorting money from farmers in the Yilo Krobo Municipality under the guise of National Security personnel.

The suspects, who were dressed in military-style uniforms, had been terrorising farming communities, including Osoya, Aboa, Osuboi No. 1, and Opesika, by posing as state security agents.

Their modus operandi involved extorting protection fees from cannabis farmers under the false pretence of shielding them from legitimate police raids.

Following months of intelligence gathering, the Police acted on a tip-off and laid an ambush at dawn.

The suspects were apprehended in Aboa shortly after they had collected an amount of GHC3,000 from local farmers.

Items seized during the operation include a silver Toyota Voxy (Reg. No. GE 8755-26), one pump-action gun, and one pistol.

The suspects are currently in custody at the Regional Police Command in Koforidua, where they are assisting with ongoing investigations.

They will be arraigned before court upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries.
