The Parliament of Ghana has officially presented the Democracy Cup trophy to the Ghana Police Service, ahead of the much-anticipated football match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak.
The presentation ceremony took place at the Police Headquarters, where a parliamentary delegation, led by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, handed over the trophy on behalf of the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, received the delegation.
In his remarks, the Inspector-General expressed the Police Administration’s profound appreciation to the Speaker and the entire parliamentary leadership for the honour bestowed upon the Service.
He gave a firm and unequivocal assurance that the Police would deploy adequate personnel and logistics to maintain law, order, and public safety at all stages of the event, before, during, and after the match.
The IGP further underscored the Service’s commitment to safeguarding all participants, including players, officials, and spectators, to guarantee that the occasion remains a peaceful celebration of national unity, sportsmanship, and democratic values.
The Democracy Cup match is scheduled for Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The fixture, which revives the historic rivalry between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, is expected to draw significant public attention and is being promoted as a platform for fostering social cohesion and national pride.
