A 52-year-old anti-illegal mining campaigner and spiritualist, Baba Ibrahim, popularly known as Alhaji Nagode, has been found dead in what police suspect to be a suicide at Assin Amoabeng, a suburb of Nyankumase Ahenkuro in the Central Region.
The body of the father of seven was discovered hanging by a rope around his neck at about 6:40 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, according to his 14-year-old daughter.
The teenager told police that her father had asked her to take her younger sibling to school and return for money to buy food.
However, upon her return approximately 30 minutes later, she found him lifeless and raised an alarm, attracting community members to the scene.
Alhaji Nagode was a farmer and spiritualist who had become an outspoken advocate against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which he said posed a significant threat to the environment.
The exact circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been officially established.
However, his daughter disclosed that her father was involved in a court case with a man in the community, with the matter reportedly scheduled for hearing today, September 7, 2026.
The Assembly Member for the area, Ekow Sadique Aidoo, confirmed the incident and said the matter had been reported to the police.
Alhaji Nagode is survived by seven children, the youngest reportedly five years old. Although he was no longer living with his wife, his daughter said the family had been left devastated by his sudden death.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
