Asante Kotoko have condemned fans who caused disturbances during and after their 1-0 Ghana Premier League defeat against Berekum Chelsea at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
The disturbances led to police shooting a fan who has been identified as Augustine Opoku. He is a commercial driver based in Kumasi.
Opoku was hit by four pellets of rubber bullets in his head; two in his left jaw, one directly in his right eye and one beneath his teeth.
The pellets in his teeth and jaw have been removed. The one in his eyes will be handled by a team of eye specialists maybe today.
But he is still stable and responding to treatment.
In a statement, Kotoko said “Hooliganism is one thing no professional club wants to be associated with and we at Asante Kotoko will not endorse any such thing.
“Ware saddened that the reaction of some of the disappointed fans after the match led to the reprehensible developments including the shooting and injury of an innocent supporter.”
The statement added that “While we vehemently condemn the conduct of any unruly fan, we find it difficult to accept the behaviour of the police officer who allegedly shot a fan.”
It was Kotoko’s first defeat of the season after two straight wins.
