Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) presidential candidate, Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi has fully endorsed the payment of payola by artistes.
Payola is the word used to describe the act of a record label or other interested party paying a radio station or TV stations to play a certain artiste’s song.
According to the veteran musician, paying media houses for music promotion is good.
“Before a musician in Ghana here will like to promote his or her music on the radio on television, he or she has to pay and it is good”, he said on ETV.
“But there is something wrong somewhere. For instance in Côte d’Ivoire, where I knew i’m privy to it. When they play we log so the artistes get money to pay for promotion unlike Ghana where it is vice versa”, he added.
Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi stated that artistes can get enough to pay payola if media houses log music they play and GHAMRO takes the royalties on behalf of the artistes.
“If you log and you play my music, I will also get money to promote the music on my network and other networks”
“GHAMRO is responsible for checking the logging system. GBC used to log but when other stations came along, they stopped”. he said.
Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi is vying to become the next MUSIGA President in an election with a date yet to be decided after a court injunction was placed on the initial.
