The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has presented relief items worth GHC132,000, along with food supplies and sanitation equipment, to flood victims in Avenor, Circle Neoplan Station, North Kaneshie, and Bubuashie.
The donation forms part of immediate emergency response efforts following the recent torrential rains that left many households and communities submerged across the metropolis.
The total support comprised GHC130,000 in direct cash disbursements to the affected communities, an additional GHC2,000 given to a shop owner to vacate a drainway, 31 boxes of cooking oil containing 372 bottles, 120 bags of rice made up of 600 pieces of 25kg bags, as well as eight wheelbarrows and eight shovels to aid residents in clearing debris and restoring their surroundings.

At Avenor, the Mayor presented GHC50,000, 20 boxes of cooking oil, 300 bags of 25kg rice, five wheelbarrows, and five shovels to support affected families and assist in the clean-up process.
At Circle Neoplan Station, Hon. Allotey donated GHC30,000, four boxes of cooking oil, 75 pieces of 25kg rice, three wheelbarrows, and three shovels to help victims and facilitate the removal of waste from the area.

The Mayor also visited North Kaneshie, including the Swanlake community and Ahonfe Close, where he handed over GHC20,000, four boxes of cooking oil containing 48 bottles, and 100 pieces of 5kg bags of rice to affected residents.

At Bubuashie Attico on Kanto Street in the Bubui Electoral Area, Hon. Allotey presented GHC30,000, three boxes of cooking oil containing 36 bottles, and 125 pieces of 5kg bags of rice, which were received by community leader Stella Yanky on behalf of the affected residents.

Speaking during his interactions with the victims, Hon. Allotey indicated that the donations were made on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Ernest Adomako, to express sympathy and provide immediate relief to residents grappling with the impact of the disaster.

He noted that the Assembly had taken note of the hardships facing residents, including the destruction of mattresses, cooking utensils, food items, and other personal belongings. He assured them that the AMA would return with additional support once a comprehensive assessment of affected households had been completed.

Hon. Allotey further stated that the AMA had provided compactors to collect refuse from the affected communities at no cost and had deployed sanitation personnel to support the ongoing clean-up exercise.

He appealed to residents to desist from dumping waste into gutters and drains, emphasising that such practices clog drainage channels and exacerbate flooding.
He assured the residents that the Assembly would continue to collaborate with community leaders and relevant agencies to clear choked drains, remove obstructions, and implement measures aimed at reducing the recurrence of floods in the affected areas.

The Mayor urged the affected residents to remain united and cooperate with their community leaders to ensure that the relief items were distributed fairly to those most in need.
The Assembly Member for the Avenor Electoral Area, Hon. Alfred Asiedu Adjei, expressed gratitude to the Mayor, President Mahama, the MP, and the AMA for their prompt response to the people’s plight.

He stated that the rice, cooking oil, cash, and sanitation tools would go a long way in supporting affected families and helping the community embark on the recovery process.
