Accra Metropolitan Assembly rolls out heat perception survey across the capital

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with Heat Resilience for All and CAPA Strategies, has initiated a citywide Heat Awareness Campaign and Extreme Heat Perceptions Survey to evaluate the impact of rising temperatures on residents and strengthen the capital’s climate resilience framework.

The initiative targets major commercial and residential areas, including Makola, Kaneshie, Agbogbloshie, Old Fadama, Chorkor, Jamestown, Korle Gonno, and CMB, to capture community-level experiences regarding heat-related health, livelihood, and productivity challenges.

Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey stated that the survey would complement a recent scientific heat-mapping exercise by integrating lived experiences into urban planning.

The data will guide evidence-based public health interventions, cooling strategies, greening initiatives, and policies prioritising vulnerable groups such as traders, transport workers, and informal settlers.

The campaign also serves an immediate public education function, promoting preventive measures including adequate hydration, shade-seeking, limited sun exposure, and neighbourly care for at-risk individuals.

The Mayor called for broad stakeholder participation, affirming that the partnership with technical agencies underscores the AMA’s commitment to collaborative, data-driven climate action.

Findings are expected to inform both short-term advisories and long-term infrastructural and policy responses.
