The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially designated its leadership for the 9th Parliament, appointing Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the Minority Leader.
Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, has previously served as Deputy Majority Leader and was promoted to Majority Leader in February 2024.
The NPP’s leadership team for the 9th Parliament includes:
- Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader
- Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader
- Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip
- Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip
This leadership selection comes after the NPP’s significant loss in the 2024 general elections, where the party’s parliamentary seats decreased from 137 to 81.
In contrast, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured over 180 seats, becoming the majority in the 9th Parliament.
The NPP plans to convene a meeting with its Members of P brief them on their roles and responsibilities in preparation for the official opening of the 9th Parliament.
This leadership selection highlights the NPP’s commitment to maintaining cohesion and ensuring effective parliamentary management as the party adapts to a new political landscape, party insiders say.
